Going on a trip

The traveller sees what he sees; the tripper sees what he has come to see. – G. K. Chesterton

Where

Google Flights is an essential planning tool for air travel. We even use it to help narrow down the destinations. Go to Google Flights and click on the map or “Explore destinations” on the home page. Adjust the date range and the map shows ticket prices for all destinations in the world. This helps us narrow down the possible destinations according to our schedule and budget.

As for road trip, we usually just pick a general direction, like, “let’s go to Upper Michigan,” or “let’s go see fall foliage in Wisconsin.” Rarely we will book lodging ahead of time. There were a couple of time that we had to sleep in the minivan.

For business trips, the destinations are predetermined. Still, the expectation and excitement of business travels are no less than any vacations. There will be other posts about business travels.

What

Travel as light as possible. For road trip, it’s less of an issue, as we can just pile stuff into the car. For air travel, traveling with only carry-on savings great deal of time at departure and arrival. Especially at the O’Hare airport where there is an express line for passenger with no check-in luggage. My “go bag” includes toiletry, international travel adapter, an USB cable, a Cat5 cable, a set of plastic utensil, a few short Velcro ties, a couple of plastic grocery bags and sandwich bags.

… half the trouble about the modern man is that he is educated to understand foreign languages and misunderstand foreigners. – G. K. Chesterton
